The problem
In a directory at this scale the hard part isn't the design, it's the search. Each of nearly sixty thousand records has to be findable at its own address, by visitors and by search engines alike. Most of the records look much like one another; set up wrong, that produces tens of thousands of thin pages and drags the whole site down with them. On top of that, businesses had to be able to add their own record, so the system has a publishing side and a data collection side.
The solution
Pages are prepared when the site is built, not worked out when a visitor arrives. Every zone, city and sector breakdown sits at its own address, and the links between them come from the data rather than being placed by hand. The business listing flow works together with the membership and admin side. The trade fair calendar and the government incentives sections were set up as content types of their own.
